The Weather Service says the first apparently touched down just south of Waldorf, then headed north -- damaging roofs and bringing down tree branches.
"We just heard a big boom," said one resident. "I heard glass shatter," said another. Denise Cole "I heard this whooshing sound and all of a sudden I heard this horrible noise and I looked out and the whole front of the house was almost obscured by the tree," said Denise Cole.
A tree toppled by a fast moving storm that sliced off the front of Cole's home. The scene was much the same throughout the neighborhood. William Nealy's once prized possession became a mangled mess of limbs and metal, "I guess a tornado or hurricane came through then knocked down all the trees and tore up the car."
Cleanup continued Monday with residents breathing a sigh of relief, "We're blessed. We could have been killed," said Cole.
Blessings are being counted, especially at Sgt. Kevin Haggin's house. He recently returned from a second tour in Iraq (web|news) . Two years ago, Haggin's mother tied a yellow ribbon to the now fallen tree.
"His ribbon is still down," she said.
It was tattered and torn, but still in tact. Just like her son, she said, who's now survived another storm."To me, this tells me something. God is with us."
The National Weather Service (web|news) said Monday that winds were measured about 80 miles per-hour.
No injuries have been reported.
