Investigators have determined that most of the more than 70 animal carcasses found in a heap in southern Frederick County are the remains of foxes, not dogs and cats.

County animal control director Harold Domer says state Agriculture (web|news) Department veterinarian Virginia Pierce has concluded that 60 of the 72 to 74 carcasses are red or gray foxes.

Domer says the rest of the bones remain unidentified, pending further examination.

A man looking for mushrooms told authorities he found the remains Tuesday in a wooded piece of undeveloped private property off Rock Hall Road near the Potomac River town of Point of Rocks.
