An explosion leveled two row houses in the city's North Side on Friday morning, but emergency crews could not immediately determine if anyone was hurt.
Allegheny County emergency dispatchers said the blast was called in around 10:35 a.m. Afterward, about 50 people stood across the street from a huge pile of rubble, including wood planks and roofing material. Some bricks also landed on the roof of a neighboring home and windows were broken in other homes, too. Glass was scattered on the sidewalk and in the street.
Two ambulances were near the scene and others were seen rushing to a nearby hospital. It was not immediately clear if those ambulances had come from the scene of the explosion.

One witness said he had just driven past and was not far away when the explosion happened.
"It hit so hard I felt the repercussions in my chest," said Darrin Adkins, 40.
A telephone pole was knocked over nearby and was leaning precariously over the road.
"I'm just glad I wasn't right beside it," he said. "It snapped that pole like a twig."
