A man and woman were shot outside an apartment building in St. Mary's County on Thursday, killing one of the victims.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. on Liberty Street in Lexington Park, Md.

Police said they found 38-year-old Thomas John Saunders and 40-year-old Melissa Lea Virasith with gunshot wounds. Saunders was flown to a shock trauma center where he was pronounced dead. Virasith was also flown to shock trauma where she's listed in critical condition after suffering two gunshot wounds.

Still on the scene of the crime, police said they arrested 39-year-old Koummane Virasith from Lexington Park. He is the ex-husband of the victim.

Police charged him with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder. He is being held in the St. Mary's County Detention Center.
