The family of an Afghanistan war veteran who was fatally shot after a standoff with police in 2006 is suing the Maryland State Police.

The wife and parents of James Emerick Dean also are suing the officers and counties involved. They allege overaggressive tactics were used to end the confrontation.

The suit says Dean was shot by a state police sniper when he pointed a gun at an armored car parked outside his home during the 14-hour standoff.

The suit says Dean had been acting crazy in response to a letter ordering him to serve again.

A state police spokeswoman referred calls to the Attorney General's office. A spokeswoman there said they had not received the suit and declined to comment.
