BOWIE, Md. - Entrepreneurs got a helping hand on learning the basics of business during a conference in Bowie, Md.
Edith Chatman is a dedicated Prince George's County employee, but she says her true passion in life is to pursue a full-time catering career.
"I love to feed people and I love to cook and I always get these wonderful compliments. I get such joy out of this. Let me find a way where I could do this on a regular basis," said Chatman.
In just one year, she hopes to have Chatman Enterprises up and running. "What I'm trying to do right now is find out exactly what I need to do to get the ball moving to start my company."
KC Ford, head of the small business conference, says there's no better time than the present to be your own boss.
"I think because so many larger businesses are closing and those opportunities may not seem to be there, the government has opened up their doors to stabilize the economy," said Ford.
President Obama recently announced a federal plan that will encourage more lending to small business owners. Government agencies at the state and county level are also reaching out.
"We have a lot of government dollars right here in the state of Maryland. Maryland is very sincere in helping small businesses," said Ford.
One couple is taking advantage of this now and subcontracting with the government. "When you start to contract and get to work on larger basis, then you have some cash flow," said Dawn Hobson, KMH Graphic Design.
To those interested in becoming a business owner, an important step is to become certified. The process varies from state to state, but in Maryland, it's free.
