Fire investigators suspect a couch placed too close to a wood stove sparked the fire that damaged a home in Laytonsville Wednesday morning.
Montgomery County (web|news) Fire and Rescue responded to the report of the fire in the 6100 block of Olney Laytonsville Road about 8:30 a.m.
Fire officials say early reports that people were trapped inside proved to be untrue. The two residents of the house were not home at the time of the fire.
No one was hurt, but a dog and several guinea pigs died in the fire.
There were 50 to 60 firefighters on the scene throughout the morning and it took them about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.
Damage is estimated at $200,000.
Olney Laytonsville Rd was closed for about an hour and may continue to be restricted traffic flow.
