CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield says the personal information of about 75,000 members of a dental HMO was accidentally posted on the Internet for two weeks in February.
The company blames a technical error for the online posting of names, address, dates of birth and Social Security numbers belonging to members of The Dental Network, which is owned by CareFirst.
The company says it has no knowledge the information was misused. However, it is offering members 12 months of free credit monitoring and information about placing fraud alerts with leading credit bureaus.
Most of the members are residents of Maryland or the District of Columbia.
The security breach was discovered Feb. 20 and members were notified in a letter dated March 10.
