Three local teams have Sweet 16 dreams as they face first-round games in the NCAA tournament on Friday.

American University lost its game against No. 2 seed Tennessee 72-57 in the East Regional at Birmingham, Alabama.

Garrison Carr led the Eagles with 24 points. Brian Gilmore was the only other American player in double figures with 13 points.

American outrebounded the Volunteers 37-25, but could not overcome 21 turnovers.

Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace each scored 13 points to lead the Georgetown Hoyas past UMBC 66-47 in the first round of the Midwest Regional.

Austin Freeman added 11 points as the Hoyas improved to 28-5. UMBC falls to 24-9.

The Hoyas shot 51 percent from the field and will play Davidson on Sunday. The 10th-seeded Wildcats defeated 7th-seed Gonzaga 82-76.

The George Mason University Patriots were knocked out of the tournament Thursday, losing 68-50 to Notre Dame in the East Regional.
