Maryland Copper Theft Bill Studied
posted 6:13 am Thu February 21, 2008 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Copper is back before Maryland lawmakers Thursday as a Senate committee starts work on a proposal to start a state registry for scrap metal sales.
More than half the states have started similar registries to clamp down on thefts of copper, which has spiked in value in recent years due to higher demand from Asia. Power and phone companies are especially interested in seeing lawmakers address copper thefts because they've seen a dramatic increase in wire thefts. There are also safety advocates calling for a registry. An Anne Arundel County man died last year when he tried to steal wire from an abandoned store and was electrocuted. Several police agencies have called for a registry to make it harder for thieves to resell copper and other valuable metals. Baltimore City already has a scrap metal registry.
