Virginia Tech Officials: Feds Mum on Emergency Funding
posted 9:09 am Tue February 19, 2008 - RICHMOND, Va.
Virginia Tech officials want some answers from the federal government.
The first anniversary of the mass shootings in April is just two months away and the Blacksburg school is still waiting for word on federal funding to help with counseling and other resources. In the meantime, the campus is rattled by a similar rampage just days ago at Northern Illinois University.
Assistant Provost Ellen Plummer says anxiety has spiked - on and off campus - since the shootings in Illinois, with many people experiencing what she calls "a sense of reliving" the April 16th shootings at Tech that left 33 people dead.
Plummer also serves as the deputy director of the university's Office of Recovery and Support. She's trying to set up a telephone meeting this week with Department of Justice staffers handling Tech's request for nearly six million dollars in federal emergency assistance funding.
The school asked for the money in September, but she says there's been little communication from federal officials about it.
A Department of Justice spokeswoman says DOJ does not discuss grants before they are awarded and would not respond to school officials' comments about the process.
