Copper Thieves in Prince William

Various construction sites and stores in the Prince William county have been hit by copper thieves over the past six months.
"It is causing the businesses a lot of money," says office Erika Hernandez. Detectives say two men caught on surveillance, broke into the VAMAC Plumbing Supply store in Manassas last Tuesday and made off with thousands of dollars in copper tubing.
A construction site trailer in Dumfries was hit on January 31st, where thieves made off with 32 of rolls of copper wiring valued at nearly $20 thousand dollars. Police believe at least one of the thieves used bolt cutters to snap the lock off the trailer.
Authorities say the criminals usually re-sell the copper to scrap metal dealers or salvage yards and turn a sizable profit.
"They can get up to $2.35 per pound if the copper is in good condition so it can be a good business for the bad guys," says Hernandez.
Prince William authorities have formed a special task force to catch the thieves because the copper theft is so bad.
