DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. - Three people had to be extricated and six more taken to the hospital after a five-car pile up in District Heights Wednesday.
Initially, fire and EMS units from the areas of District Heights, Silver Hill and Morningside responded to the multi-vehicle crash, but in the end one engine company, two paramedic units, five ambulances, three rescue squads, one EMS command officer and three incident command officers were on the scene to help extricate, treat and transport the victims.
It happened at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Silver Hill Road around 3 p.m. Rescue crews responded and found three trapped occupants in one of the vehicles. Responders were able to extricate the trapped patients who received serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The remaining six patients were also transported to a local hospital with less serious injuries, officials say.
The accident occurred during a period of steady rainfall and low visibility, however, all patients were on the way to the hospital within 30 minutes. Officials say the roadway seemed to be clear of any frozen elements. The Prince George's County Police Department will be conducting an investigation into the crash.
