WASHINGTON - D.C. police have arrested a woman on suspicion of drunk driving after she crashed into a tree while allegedly fleeing from another accident scene. She had three children inside her vehicle, police said.
Investigators believe the driver took off after hitting a pedestrian in front of Iverson Mall in Temple Hills about 1 p.m. Monday. The driver's vehicle allegedly hit another vehicle before crashing on South Capitol Street near Southern Avenue.
"She came down here, lost control and just plowed into that tree," said Omar Malik, who works at a souvenir stand just feet from the crash. "She looked drunk when she got out."
Malik was most troubled by what he says she did after the crash.
"She just start walking away. She didn't say nothing, she didn't look at nobody -- she had blood on her lip and black eyes and she just started walking away," Malik said.
D.C. police arrested the female driver on charges of drunk driving and reckless endangerment. Prince George's County police plan to extradite her on charges of leaving the scene of an accident. The pedestrian suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.
"Oh man, it [upsets] me, you know? When you would drive with kids when you're intoxicated?" asked Nate Saunders, who witnessed the crash. "I can't believe she would even get into a car for real."
Three children from the woman's vehicle were taken to the hospital after the crash, also with non-life-threatening injuries.
