FORT WASHINGTON, Md. - Students, parents, and football players packed a Prince George's County church to say goodbye to a beloved football coach, who died in a car crash.

"Nick was definitely a champion," said one mourner.

Speaking of Suitland football coach Nick Lynch at his funeral, one attendee said you never know how many live's you touched, until you die.

Lynch may never know how many live's he bettered, but by the estimated 4,000 plus filling the Ebenezer AME Church to capacity, its clear he touched many.

"I wasn't about to graduate, he was there for me all of 2003 to 2006," said Patria Davis. She says he believed in her when even she didn't. "I wouldn't have graduated if it wasn't for him," she said.

"It's devastating," said friend Jim Woods. "I'm really at a loss for words as to why someone's ticket gets punch when they are 43 years old."

Lynch, a former drug council in D.C., and father of three died in a traffic accident December 31st.

Making a left turn off Branch Ave in Brandywine, less than a mile from his home. On Friday, mourners filled the Suitland High football field, where in 13 seasons coach Lynch took a team that had never made the playoffs to two state championships and where more importantly he was a friend, mentor and father figure to his players.

"He stressed football but also academics, wanted them to end up in a good place, and to stay out of trouble," said football coach John Morgan.

"We just have to find it in our hearts to go on, and his legacy will live on in the students of Suitland High School," said Kimesha Gray.

Pastors say this was the largest funeral they've ever held here. Many of those attending, students at Suitland High. Grief counselors were at the school on Monday. Still students say they are in shock.
