Maryland Snuffs Out Smoking
posted 6:11 am Fri February 01, 2008 -
It's time to step outside for Maryland smokers as a statewide ban on smoking indoors took effect overnight. The law bans lighting up in any bars or restaurants with employees. The law includes many private clubs such as the American Legion.
The law does not ban smoking in an outdoor area of a bar or restaurant.
Bar owners who violate the law could be fined - but they can avoid fines by proving they took steps to prevent people from smoking in their bars, such as posting "No Smoking" signs or removing ashtrays.
Businesses can receive a waiver if they can prove that they have lost 15 percent or more of sales directly as a result of the smoking ban. All waivers expire in three years.
