Homeowner Assistance Plan Will Likely Avoid Budget Ax

Leaders in Prince William County say a program that helps homeowners facing foreclosure will likely survive any cuts in county spending.
Supervisors considered cutting funding for the Prince William County Financial Education Program last year but restored the county's $167,000 contribution before the housing crisis unfolded last year. The program helps homeowners stay afloat by working with lenders to sell the property or negotiate newer, affordable terms. Program manager Joe Botta tells The (Washington) Examiner that when foreclosures climbed by at least tenfold last year to more than 2,000, the program's clients doubled to 166. He says that kept at least 100 families out of foreclosure.
Supervisor John Jenkins says tough economic times for many homeowners mean they need help now more than ever.
